Coming Spring 2013: The Gilded Age

The Gilded Age #1Welcome to the world of The Gilded Age

1877.  The full dawn of Industrial Revolution has collided with the twilight of the age of magic and alchemy, leading to a most curious progeny: self-aware clockwork men. Man-made machines, with clockwork gears and steam-powered joints, serve man even as the followers of the old ways continue to nurse growing resentment of these new creations. Their continued development and growing self-awareness have pushed society to form the Mechanical Movement.  This organization, led by Pope Engineer III, sees these creatures as little more than complex machinery geared toward particular tasks.  In their view, any human who would defile their bodies with metal parts should no longer have any place amongst the purebloods.  Opposing them are the Protechnicals, who push for coexistence with and equal rights for both the mechanical beings and the humans who have “polluted” their bodies with artificial limbs.

Trying to find its own way in this world, the Branning Troupe, made up of actors and carnival folk, moves throughout Europe performing its acts night in and night out. For some, the Troupe offers a direction to their lives; others seek the adoration of the crowds.  For all, it represents a fragile, simple refuge from a world which has cast them out.  They are a new family.

And each member has their own desires and secrets…

Characters

  • Hannah Lancaster
  • Elias Gladstone
  • Silas Gideon
  • Keturah
  • Charlie the Clockwork
  • hanna One of the newest members of the Troupe, Hannah is still learning her place within the group and in the larger world. Well schooled by her family, she is a true jack-of-all trades, knowledgeable in a number of languages, fencing, and acting. But she still has much to learn about the ways of the world. A girl like her might do well in proper society, and yet she has ended up with the other outcasts.

  • eliasgladstone Stage magician of small note, he manages to dazzle his audiences with feats that seem on the edge of impossible. And that’s the secret, what he does is not just illusion, but he is able to work with real magic. The Troupe affords him the opportunity to travel throughout Europe and procure these items of power.

  • silas The Gunfighter from the Americas. The rumor is that he lost his right arm at the shoulder due to shrapnel he received in the Civil War. At some point, prior to joining the Troupe, he managed to have the injured limb replaced with a fully functional mechanical arm. An arm which effectively makes him the fastest gun.

  • keturah The Gypsy, the knife thrower, the dazzler of the stage… Keturah adapts quite well to her surroundings. She left her tribe long ago, ignoring the well-preserved ideas of duty to her group behind her as well. But family is not something that can be chosen.

  • charlieclockwork It seems as long as there has been a Branning Troupe, Charlie has been a part of it. His great size allows him to act as the group’s muscle as well as heavy labor, but he is not just simple Clockwork muscle. Charlie appears to have the ears of the mysterious leader/owner o f the Troupe, and is a valued advisor to him.
